NBC wins rights to next FOUR Olympics, upsets other networks

NBC wins rights to next FOUR Olympics, upsets other networksTheInternational Olympic Committee (IOC) in Switzerland just announced that NBCUniversal would acquire the rights to broadcast the next four Olympics in the United States (until 2020).Both Fox and ABC/ESPN presented bids to the IOC this week as well but it was NBC who won and willreportedly shell out $4 billion for the rights.

The win wassurprisingto some as rumors had been swirling that NBC would not agree to keep paying the increasingly hefty price tag. And some believed the surprise departure of NBC Sports legendDick Ebersol in May was fueled by the uncertainty of dollars available to buy the rights to future Olympics.

For the past few days, the IOC was reviewing bids for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia and 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. They were looking at presentations for future Olympics as well. It?s still unknown where the 2018 Winter Games and 2020 Summer Games will be held. Annecy, France; Munich, Germany and Pyeongchang, South Korea are in the running for 2018. An announcement is expected in July.
