Jim Messina, Obama's Enforcer

The Nation:

In March 2009 the Campaign for America's Future, a top progressive group in Washington, launched a campaign called "Dog The (Blue) Dogs" to pressure conservative Blue Dog Democrats to support President Obama's budget. When he heard about the effort, White House deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, who was regarded as the Obama administration's designated "fixer," called CAF's leaders into the White House for a dressing down, according to a CAF official. If the group wanted to join the Common Purpose Project, an exclusive weekly strategy meeting between progressive groups and administration officials, CAF had to drop the campaign. We know how to handle the Blue Dogs better than you do, Messina said. Not wanting to sour its relationship with the White House at this early date, CAF complied, and the campaign quickly disappeared from its website. Despite Messina's assurance, however, the Blue Dogs would remain a major obstacle to the realization of the president's legislative agenda.

Investor Interview ? Andrin Bachmann Talks Seed And Pan-European Investments

Andrin Bachmann PhotoAndrin Bachmann is founding partner of Piton Capital, investing in online businesses with network effect across Europe, a NextWomen panelist and Astia advisor. The serial entrepreneur turned venture capitalist tells The NextWomen about his journey as a founder, becoming an investor, early stage valuation and what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

How did you first become an entrepreneur? Tell us about your background, founding glocalnet, scaling it to Sweden?s 3rd largest consumer telecom SP and the successful exit.

I met with my co-founder while still at university. We wrote our first business plan while I was finishing my thesis, and a few weeks after graduation we incorporated the company. Needless to say, the original business plan turned out to be spectacularly wrong. We were planning to build a network based on voice-over-IP, which was probably 10 years ahead of its time. Luckily, we were agile enough to change our business model.

Instead of focusing on technology, we put the customers at the centre of our strategy. Specifically, we lowered our customer acquisition cost by partnering with well-established brands, and made effective use of the Internet to provide good customer service and billing. Glocalnet ultimately went public on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, and were able to use our listed shares as a currency to acquire smaller competitors. In the end, Telenor acquired the business.

When did you first want to become an investor, and how did you go about it?

I got to know many private equity and venture capital firms while still an entrepreneur. One of them was M/C Venture Partners, a Boston-based firm focused on the telecom and media sectors. I joined them in 2001 to set up a European office.

When and why did you move to the UK? How would you describe the European start-up and VC landscape, and how would you say it compares to Asia, the US and Americas?

I moved to the UK in 2001. I think the European entrepreneurial community has come a long way in the past 10 years. Many successful entrepreneurs now don?t want to rest on their laurels and either continue founding businesses, or apply their experience and skills as investors. It is also very good to see places like London and Berlin developing into proper entrepreneurial clusters. Nevertheless, we can still learn much from our US colleagues when it comes to thinking big and taking risks. On the other hand, I also admire many entrepreneurs in emerging markets around the world for their incredible desire for success and work ethic.

Why would you say VCs are always looking for high return consumer focused start-ups (the next facebook or google)?

Returns in the VC business tend to be dominated by the ?home runs?.

Therefore, it is rational that investors chase the next big thing. Of course, VCs are often completely wrong in their assessment of what those big successes will be.

I find it more productive to stay focused on some core principle (in our case the concept of network effects), rather than to chase the fashionable sector of the moment.

Tell us about Piton Capital, its partners, investors, focus and targets. Why marketplaces and why Europe?

I set up Piton Capital with two partners a few years ago. Initially, we were operating as private investors, and then set up a fund which includes external capital in 2010. Our fund is focused on online businesses with network effects ? businesses with a product or service that gets better the more people use it. That could be marketplaces, exchanges, networks, communities, etc. We have been heavily involved in some large successes in this area in the past, such as autotrader, betfair and qxl. We believe that these experiences and our strong focus help us make informed decisions about companies we look at now, and allow us to add more value once we get involved.

Finding and evaluating investments is a heavily people-driven business, and our networks are strongest in Europe, hence our geographic focus. Operating across multiple countries is definitely challenging at times, and it is important for us to work with partners who have a more regional approach.

Please describe what you call seed stage investment, and an early stage start-up.

I am not a huge fan of trying to put labels on companies, but an early-stage company in the Internet world for me is one with an existing product or service, some evidence of user traction, and possibly early indications of monetization. Seed is anything that lacks these components.

What do you look for in your investments? Why have you decided to invest in your current portfolio, and what were the key selling points?

The overarching theme in all of our investment is a service that gets better the more people use it. Bullionvault is an online exchange for physical gold ownership. The spread of people buying and selling gold gets narrower as liquidity on the exchange increases. Dawanda is a marketplace for unique items. Choice for consumers increases as more sellers are on the platforms, and demand increases for sellers as more buyers come on.

Likewise for jameslist, a classified marketplace for luxury goods.

fotocommunity is a community for artistically ambitious amateur photographers. More users mean a larger audience for the members? creative output, and more like-minded people to socialize and exchange ideas with.

What are the top requirements for a start-up to be interesting in terms of investment? How important is the team versus the idea? And how important is it to show adoption versus revenue in the eyes of an investor?

The team is always important, but especially so at an early stage, when it is essentially all you are buying as an investor. Clearly it?s great if there is revenue and usage traction. If there isn?t, a good explanation as to why that will change going forward certainly helps.

How many business plans are sent to you every week, and what actually gets a founder a foot in your door? How often do you get pitched by women founders?

Like most investors, we get a lot more business plans than we can take a serious look at. A good way to get to the top of the pile is for a deal to come in through an existing relationship. Therefore, my recommendation is for entrepreneurs to seek introductions, rather than send plans ?cold?.

Unfortunately, the percentage of pitches by women founders is in the single digits.

How long does it usually take from the first contact you have with a founder to the investment money being in their hands? How early would you advice founders to start looking for investment, and how to set the right pre-money valuation?

Being a small partnership, we can take decisions very quickly. However, I think it is in the interest of both the entrepreneur and the investor to build a relationship before the need for funding arises.I usually advocate a ?lean startup? mentality ? I like companies with products or services that are compelling enough to attract early usage without heavy sales & marketing spend.

Setting a valuation for an early-stage business is an art rather than a science ? the ?right? valuation is probably one that both the entrepreneur and the investor are slightly unhappy with.

When you were a founder, how much capital did you raise in exchange for how much equity, in how many rounds? Anything you would have done differently looking back as an investor?

We raised about $6m of early-stage capital in two rounds, and then additional money for growth later on. We went through very distinct capital market environments: Relatively benign early on in 1997, then extremely difficult in late 1998 at the height of the Russian financial crisis, and finally the dotcom bubble years of 1999 and 2000.

As there wasn?t really any venture capital around, our investors were a mix of high-net worth individuals, and some traditional institutional investors.

With hindsight, the mistake we made in funding the business was that we didn?t always spend money wisely, and therefore had to raise too much.

What would you say are the most important entrepreneur traits for success?

Persistence, action-orientation, ability to deal with uncertainty and risk, competitiveness, ability to see the big picture, flexibility, ability to sell to different constituencies, and above all: luck.

Any female internet heroes?

She may have lost her vibe towards the end of her reign, but Meg Whitman grew eBay from $4 million in revenues to $8 billion in about 10 years. She had the benefit of a fantastic underlying business model, but that is a stunning achievement.

Charlie Sheen Sued For $20 Million Over Reality Show Project

Charlie Sheen is being sued for $20 million for allegedly trying to ruin the reality show that was planned.

Actor Charlie Sheen is accused of destroying the reality television project about himself and his family by television producer Ed Meyer.

The producer claims Charlie, 45, conspired to interfere with contractual relations and that his parents, Martin Sheen and his wife Janet, acted as ?co-conspirators? in destroying the reality program.

But actor Martin Sheen and Janet were not named as co-defendants in the filing.

The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, using Charlie?s birth named, Carlos Irwin Estevez.

The documents claim: ?Starting on January 4, 2010, Defendant Carlos Irwin Estevez, along with co-conspirators Martin Sheen and Janet Sheen, all non-parties to the Reality Show deal, did internationally and tortuously: threaten, interfere with and restrain, and also conspire to: threaten, interfere with and restrain the Plaintiff?s reality television project starring their relative Joe Estevez, titled: ?About The Sheens? aka ?Being Sheen? aka ?Sheen Reality,? thus destroying the contractual relationships and damaging the Plaintiff Ed Meyer.?

Meyer is seeking at least $20 million in damages ?for the outrageous tortuous conduct? of Sheen.

But Charlie Sheen?s lawyer, Marty Singer, has blasted the lawsuit, stating, ?This is the most ridiculous lawsuit I have ever seen in my 30-year career. My client doesn?t even know who this person is.?

Top 5 Investments in Start-ups: Color, Jumio, Kickstarter, The Filter, Profitably

Strategy eye reported the top5 investment in Startups.

ColorCOLOR

There are a lot of reasons to take note of social photo sharing firm Color. One of these is that as it launched its app this week it revealed that it had USD41m in backing from three significant Silicon Valley VCs: Sequoia Capital, Bain Capital and Silicon Valley Bank. Another is that this is reportedly the most money Sequoia has ever committed to a pre-launch startup and that includes Google (even taking inflation into account that?s impressive). A third reason is the pedigree of its staff, which includes CEO Bill Nguyen who founded music streaming startup Lala and sold it to Apple last year, and DJ Patil, who was formerly LinkedIn?s chief scientist.

Sequoia Capital partner Doug Leone has another reason: ?Once or twice a decade a company emerges from Silicon Valley that can change everything. Color is one of those companies.? Put simply it allows people to share photos, videos and text with other users within 100 feet of them. It?s an open network with no log-in necessary and anyone within the vicinity has access to the content others put out there. By combining social media, location and pictures Color ticks three hot digital media boxes, which is what is getting everybody so excited. It?s got no business model as such yet, but somewhat inevitably its revenues will eventually revolve around advertising.

JUMIO

Everybody knows that mobile payments are set to explode in a similar way that e-commerce has. But online payment generally growth is still hampered by fraud. This is something Jumio, which took on USD6.5m this week intends to address when it launches in a month?s time. It won?t say exactly how it intends to simplify payments or protect consumers, but it has a plan. It also has Facebook co-founder, Eduardo Saverin, on board who led the funding round.

KICKSTARTER

Starting as a crowdsourced funding platform for creative arts project, Kickstarter has ambitions to move its model into a broader business area and fund all types of projects and entrepreneurial ideas. This is presumably what the USD10m it took on a year ago, but only just revealed is being used for. It has proved remarkably coy about its investment and investors, which include high-profile figures such as Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake and Arrested Development star David Cross. It claims it currently generates more than USD1m in crowdsourced pledges a week and that of the 17,000 projects launch on Kickstarter a little over a third have been successful. As a business itself, its commission-based business model is simple, effective and built into the service.

THE FILTER

The Filter is a good concept. Originally conceived as a music recommendation service it?s now a broader content recommendation engine. But would it receive so much attention if ex-Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel wasn?t its founder and an investor? It?s unlikely. Recommendation is a key part of many an online player?s portfolio these days so celebrity backer apart what differentiates The Filter? Current clients such as NBC, DailyMotion, Warner Bros and Sony Music are relatively impressive as is it claims that it?s serving up 100 million recommendations per month.

PROFITABLY

With a clearly defined target market of small businesses and a nifty online accounting analytics offering that undercuts larger firms that target big business, Profitably is in an accelerated growth phase.Just a year old and it says it has 500 customers. Although the USD1.1m it has just taken on is actually its second investment round CEO Adam Neary says hes considers it seed funding. He says it needed it ?to keep this party going?. Why do accountants always have to use words like ?party? to try and make their service (however successful) sound more exciting?

Maya Bloch's 'hello stranger' at Thierry Goldberg Projects, NYC

In her most recent body of work, "hello stranger," Israeli artist Maya Bloch continues to set herself free from the tyranny of the literal world and creates this new one, in liquid silver, where she introduces a cast of characters through the paint that, mask-like, encases them. A painter's painter, Bloch's spare use of color and bleeding pigmentation makes one sense that certain elements were created while on a horizontal surface, with their colors running into each other in inky pools of black and umber. The figures are simultaneously dead and alive, and their collective gaze vibrates somewhere between suspicion and brutal honesty. Maya Bloch lives and works in Tel Aviv.

Rihanna won't talk to Chris Brown

Rihanna has admitted that despite having recently relaxed her five-year restraining order against ex-boyfriend Chris Brown - who assaulted her in 2009 - she doesn't expect to speak to him ever again.

Rihanna doesn't expect to speak to Chris Brown ever again.

The 'What's My Name' hitmaker - who was assaulted by the 21-year-old singer, her then-boyfriend, in 2009 - explained while she recently had the terms of her five-year restraining order against the star relaxed, it doesn't mean the pair will ever "make up".

She said: "It doesn't mean we're gonna make up, or even talk again. It just means I didn't want to object to the judge. We don't have to talk again ever in my life. I just didn't want to make it more difficult for him professionally.

What he did to me was a personal thing

"What he did to me was a personal thing. It had nothing to do with his career. Saying he has to be a hundred feet away from me, he can't perform at awards shows, that definitely made it difficult for him. That was the only thing it was going to change, so I didn't care."

The 23-year-old singer also admitted while she has come to terms with the fact that she won't be able to please everyone with the way she handled the situation, it was a "very vulnerable" time in her life and she didn't want people to feel sorry for her.

Rihanna added to Rolling Stone magazine: "You can never please people. One minute I'm being too hard, and the next minute I'm a fool because I'm not being hard enough.

"I put my guard up so hard. I didn't want people to see me cry. I didn't want people to feel bad for me. It was a very vulnerable time in my life, and I refused to let that be the image. I wanted them to see me as, 'I'm fine, I'm tough.' I put that up until it felt real."

Sara Ramirez Is 'Amazing' in Grey's Musical Episode, Says Costar

The doctors of Grey's Anatomy definitely know something about both surgery and sex ? but do they know how to sing?

Viewers are about to find out Thursday, when several of the more melodically inclined members of the cast ? Tony winner Sara Ramirez, Kevin McKidd, Chandra Wilson and Chyler Leigh among them ? raise their voices in song for a special musical episode of the medical drama.

Grey's Anatomy: The Music Event features an extended musical fantasy playing out in the head of Callie Torres (Ramirez), with performances of several tunes very familiar to longtime viewers of the show, including The Fray's "How to Save a Life," Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" and Brandi Carlile's "The Story."

"I sing a little bit," McKidd told PEOPLE recently at the 8th Annual John Varvatos fundraiser for rape crisis center Stuart House. "I'm not like Sara Ramirez ? she's pretty amazing! I mean, off the chart. She's a Tony Award winner for a reason, and the rest of us bask in her shadow. Chyler is a great singer, Chandra Wilson's a great singer, and I can get away with it, let's put it that way. I'll let people judge what they think."

One Grey's doc who wasn't McDream-ing about a solo was series star Patrick Dempsey. "I have no voice at all, so I was very adamant not to sing," Dempsey said. "I'm very much happy to be supporting the rest of the cast in this one." But Dempsey said the cast quickly got over any apprehension about the high-concept episode.

"Everybody was a little leery of it at first, because we were like 'Well, should we jump on the bandwagon of Glee?' because they do what they do so beautifully," said Dempsey. "But it was an opportunity, I think, for some of the cast members to really show their talents musically. And it's really quite moving when you hear Sara's voice and Kevin's voice. Even Justin Chambers sings beautifully, and Eric Dane does a great job. So it's really nice to see them have a moment to shine in a different way and hopefully entertain the fans and keep it fresh."

McKidd said he didn't care if he fell flat. He loved the chance to shake things up. "Nobody has a clue what's going to work, and that's the fun of it," he said. "That's the experiment of being in show business. You don't know what is going to resonate with an audience and what isn't, and you've got to try stuff. I'm always up for that challenge. That's what I love about acting and the job I do."

"I don't love musicals, so I was kind of like 'Oh, great,' " admitted Jesse Williams, who plays Dr. Jackson Avery. "But it's really, really beautiful. Shooting it was really, really moving."

But not quite moving enough for Williams to want to move from the chorus into the spotlight. "I think the producers mistook me saying no for false modesty, but then they got me in the booth and realized, yeah, they should probably not make anybody endure the horrors of my voice."

Rihanna's bedroom behavior: 'I like to be spanked'

Mar 30, 2011

Somewhere Chris Brown's probably throwing a chair right now.

Why? Because Rihanna is talking about him in the new issue of Rolling Stone. And she seems to handle the questions with no trouble.

When asked about why she agreed to let a judge ease the restraining order against Brown, she explains, "That's my decision. It doesn't mean we're gonna make up, or even talk again. It just means I didn't want to object to the judge."

She hasn't heard from Brown in a very long time. "We don't have to talk ever again in my life," she says. "I just didn't want to make it more difficult for him professionally. What he did was a personal thing ? it had nothing to do with his career. Saying he has to be a hundred feet away from me, he can't perform at awards shows ? that definitely made it difficult for him."

Other highlights:

-On the aftermath of the Brown incident: "I put my guard up so hard. I didn't want people to see me cry. I didn't want people to feel bad for me. It was a very vulnerable time in my life, and I refused to let that be the image. I wanted them to see me as, 'I'm fine, I'm tough.' I put that up until it felt real."

-On S&M being semi-autobiographical. "Being submissive in the bedroom is really fun. You get to be a little lady, to have somebody be macho and in charge of (you). That's fun to me...I like to be spanked."

-On sexting: "When you're not with the person you want to be intimate with, a picture is the next best thing. Well, Skype is safer. But a picture lasts a long time. When you're alone, and those horny moments come up, pictures can be very handy."

Russell Brand Says Taking Mom To Oscars Makes Up For His Years Of Delinquency

Russell Brand Says Taking Mom To Oscars Makes Up For His Years Of Delinquency

Russell Brand seems to think that he has made up for the years of hell he put his mom through when he was a junkie by taking her to the Oscars. The big star took his mother to the Oscar celebrations this year and that apparently meant the world to her.

Russell?s past has been plagued by his drug abuse and naturally his single mother paid a big price as well. Russel said: ?One of the main memories I have from when I was on drugs is feeling really low with my mum. There were all those horrible things for her, like getting calls from police stations.?

?I remember when I was in rehab on Christmas Day in 2002, with my mum visiting and sat on my bed ? you could see that she was scared and disappointed. Jimmy Carr was on TV and I?d been in a show with him not long before at the Hackney Empire?s New Act Of The Year. I had been in the same heat to get to the final but there he was on TV doing a tribute to Peter Cook ? and I?m sat in rehab with my mum. I was a broken person and I had broken my family. I felt lonely. So being able to take her to the Oscars ? a bit of payback for the stuff she went through when I was a kid ? was good.?

Despite the glitz and glamour of the Oscars, Russell admitted he had a better time on a rainy day at Timbuk2 adventure park in Upminster, Essex, with pop star wife Katy Perry and some of his pal?s kids.

?By the time you?ve been through a night of that glamorous stuff, you realise it?s not all that. ?We had a better time at Timbuk2 with my pal Danny?s nephews. We went with all the kids, my mum and Katy.?

To say things have changed for Russell would be the understatement of the century. The life of an A-list star is something he is now well accustomed to thanks to the big-money production of his latest movie, a remake of hit Eighties comedy Arthur, with Russell filling the shoes of the late, great comic Dudley Moore, who died in 2002. The new script was written by Peter Baynham, a British comedian who created classic material for Alan Partridge, Borat and Brass Eye. Russell leads a great cast including Helen Mirren and Nick Nolte.

He said: ?I?ve got a really good relationship with Helen. In interviews she?ll come out with stuff? she?s outspoken. When I?m doing Press with her, I?m like, ?Woah! Careful mate, you can?t just say that.?

There are obvious similarities between Russell and Dudley. Both funnymen hail from the same part of the world and have had their share of trouble with booze and women.

Russell said: ?He was from Essex so I?m so proud of it. Also, I feel like the new film is not in any way disrespectful to the original and I feel like I properly loved Dudley Moore. I watched Not Only? But Also, Beyond The Fringe ? I?m a student and a fan.?

Like the pre-rehab Russ, his character Arthur likes a drink, and the now-teetotal comic enjoyed playing the drunken scenes.
Russ said: ?Arthur is a very different drunk than I was. He?s like a fun-loving drunk, I was like a miserable, moany smackhead. ?The way we approached it, well if you didn?t have to go to work, why not spend the whole day drunk? ?On set I?d carry a bottle of Courvoisier, or tequila, I?d smell different boozes depending on how drunk I wanted to be in the film then remember mad nights slumped outside pubs in north London and waking up on a sofa drenched in wee wee.?

Arthur is a big role for Russell and a major step from his days of stand-up comedy and MTV to major global stardom. As long as he stays straight and sober there is no reason he shouldn?t enjoy a long and prosperous career.

Teen speaks out against car surfing

Elon Glickman uses his experience to warn parents and peers about the dangers of street surfing. Elon lost his friend Adir Vered, seen in the photo Elon is holding, a year ago. (John McCoy/L.A. Daily News)

The memory of that night still brings him heartache, but he speaks through the pain anyway.

"My name is Elon Glickman, and my best friend is dead," the blue-eyed teenager tells an auditorium filled with parents one night last month.

"He died in a car accident. He was at my house a few hours before and then I never saw him again."

For Elon, 17, the speech he gives to parents and to students is a matter of life and death. It is important that others hear it, because thousands of teenagers like him and his friend Adir Vered make bad decisions every day.

On Feb. 12, 2010, Adir was riding in a moving car with his head stuck out the open passenger window when it crashed into a parked car on a Northridge street. Adir, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was killed in the impact.

No drugs or alcohol were involved, police said.

But the incident left those who knew Adir at a loss. This was the lover of life, the boy with the easy smile.

"After he passed away, I was lost," Elon said. "I felt hopeless and depressed. I thought, what could I do?"

Last month, near the one-year anniversary of Adir's death, Elon spoke to a group of parents at New Community Jewish High School in West Hills, where he attends, and where he met Adir.

Elon wasn't there when Adir died, but he knows what his friends were up to that night.

He's done it too.

He's ridden in the passenger seat without a seatbelt, then

opened the door as the car sped down the road. And he's hoisted himself up so that his feet dangled just above the pavement as the driver accelerates, swerves and flips U-turns.

It's a variation of street or car surfing.

Last year, an 18-year-old Malibu High School student was filmed climbing atop a vehicle as it sped down Pacific Coast Highway.

"I coach football, and boys are all about testosterone and thinking they are invincible," said Sgt. Nick Titiriga, from the LAPD's Valley Traffic division.

Adir's death brought back painful memories when Titiriga heard of the accident. In a similar accident, Titiriga's own son was seriously injured while hanging out the open window of a moving car. The car hit a telephone pole.

"That was the worst moment of my life," Titiriga said, adding that movies and shows such as "Jackass" only encourage young men to take on such dangerous stunts.

"Car surfing is not as common around (the Valley), but we hear about it through word of mouth," he said.

In reality, Elon said, it is much more popular than most people, especially parents, think.

While crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, overall accidents involving youths have dropped.

Still, federal officials have spotted an upward trend in car surfing.

Since 1990, nearly 100 teens died or were seriously injured as a result of the thrill-seeking activity, which is defined as riding on the exterior of a moving vehicle.

Information about car surfing injuries and deaths was gathered by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention. Researchers reviewed newspaper reports from 1990 through 2008. Most of the incidents occurred in the South and Midwest.

"Their findings answer common questions about this dangerous phenomenon, which appears to be most popular among young people, especially teenage males," according to the CDC.

"I think it's a miracle every single day that I didn't die," Elon says, which is why he would like to take his speech to more schools.

"It's powerful for parents to hear from a 'good kid' that parents need to actively parent their children and constantly remind them to think before they act," said Ellen Howard, principal at New Community Jewish High School.

Elon's mother, Lori Glickman, said the talks have helped her son deal with the loss of his friend, but also exposed a truth: She was sickened with fear when she discovered that Elon had street surfed, too.

"My heart was in my stomach," she said. "They were all good boys. When he told me he was doing this stuff, I almost threw up."

To most who met him, Adir was fun-loving, Lori Glickman said.

"Unfortunately for him, Elon is no stranger to loss," said Glickman, who raised Elon and his younger sister after her husband died when Elon was 2.

"When he lost Adir, it was important for him to get the message out there to other kids," she said. "In a blink of an eye, Elon's life change in a profound way."

Elon says he hopes other schools will contact him so that he can spread the message of how it's important for parents to understand that even good kids do dumb things.

"It's still painful," Elon says. "Every time after I speak, I don't want to do it again. But I just know I have to."

The memory of that night still brings him heartache, but he speaks through the pain anyway.

In fact, the hair is about to go on display at Lucky Strike Lanes in Miami ... where fans of Bieber's locks can pose with the strands ... as long as they cough up a donation for the tsunami relief effort in Japan.

Scarlett Johansson & Sean Penn were all over each other at Reese?s wedding

wenn3209718

As previously reported, Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn went to Reese Witherspoon?s wedding. TOGETHER. I would pay good money to see Sean Penn throw rice at Reese Witherspoon, but mostly because I think Sean probably has good aim, and he would end up trying to maim poor Reese. Anyway, yes, ScarJo?s dong haze continues, and she?s taking her dong haze on the road. It?s not enough for Sean and Scar to publicly grope each other at restaurants. Now they have to do it at weddings too. Us Weekly has an interesting story about Scar and Sean?s activities at and after the wedding, and prepare yourself. You?ll be nauseous by the end of the article.

To make their first bonafide Hollywood debut as a couple, Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn picked the most romantic event possible: a wedding!

Although the couple were caught packing on the PDA during a romantic trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Johansson, 26, and Penn, 50, have tried to keep their fledgling romance quiet closer to home.

But the duo were finally ready to go public, at least among other A-listers, on Saturday at Reese Witherspoon?s wedding to Jim Toth, a CAA agent who represents Johnasson among many others.

The hot new couple watched Witherspoon, 35, wed Toth, 40, at the actress? Ojai, Calif. home alongside such celebs as Renee Zellweger, Tobey Maguire and wife Jennifer Meyer, Robert Downey Jr., Matthew McConaughey and love Camila Alves, Alyssa Milano, Colin Hanks, Isla Fisher and hubby Sacha Baron Cohen.

When the farm-style bash was over, Penn and Johansson stopped by Jimmy?s Bar at Ojai Inn and Spa for a nightcap and late-night grub.

According to an eyewitness, Johnasson (wearing a low-cut black with dress, black shawl, and red lipstick) was rattled by all the stares at the packed bar. ?This is so terrifying,? she muttered to suit-clad Penn, who held her hand as he led her to their seat.

After the duo ordered gin and tonics, pizza and a club sandwich, they were joined by actor Tom Hooper and a female pal. The Iron Man 2 star gushed about the wedding ? and the cake! ?It was so great!? she told the table.

After the table cleared, she sat in Penn?s lap ? and they made out in full view for 15 minutes, according to the observer.

An insider recently told Us that Johansson, who split from hubby Ryan Reynolds last December is ?head over heels? for Penn.

[From Us Weekly]

?She sat in Penn?s lap ? and they made out in full view for 15 minutes.? THIS is what worries me. I know a lot of you dislike Scar and you think she?s a slut, and I?m here to tell you: you?re right. She is a slut. She always has been, and if my personal theory about her split from Ryan Reynolds has always involved her wanton biscuits latching on to another man, or other men. That being said, I?ve always respected Scar?s slutty ways. This is a girl who boned Benicio del Toro in an elevator. This is a girl who seduced her fair share of leading men before she got married. I respect that. What I don?t respect is that Scarlett is acting like Sean is ?The One?. That this isn?t just about sex, or a fun fling. I worry about her, I really do.

Also: ?This is so terrifying,? ScarJo said. What does that mean?!

Daily News Editorial: Should we dump nuclear energy plans?

FOR years, nuclear power has been considered a viable way to address global warming concerns and lessen environmentally harmful coal and oil energy production. But Japan's current nuclear crisis has the U.S. rethinking its future nuclear energy pursuits.

In the wake of the 30-year anniversary this week of the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island nuclear plant and continued devastation brought on by the 1986 Chernobyl accident in the Ukraine, those in favor of greater nuclear energy reliance are reminded that it too has its risks.

Is it worth it? Is it time to recommit to nuclear energy, or to renounce it?

Some say the risks are too high - much higher and potentially more harmful to human health than coal or oil. Take the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico nearly a year ago. Proponents point out that recovery from a disaster like that massive oil spill pales in comparison to a nuclear crisis because radioactive leaks can't be cleaned up.

Still, proponents of nuclear energy proliferation persist that the day-to-day effects of coal and oil extraction are far more costly to our environment than the rare and unexpected nuclear slip up.

What do you think?

Should the U.S. dump its future nuclear energy plans? Or is Japan's nuclear disaster an unfortunate occurrence that shouldn't thwart our nuclear ambitions?

Is Japan's nuclear crisis a signal that our environmentally conscious aspirations may be just

as unsafe as our current practices?

Katy Perry could be a preacher

28 March 2011

Rate this article

A book proposal written by Katy Perry's mother Mary Hudson reportedly details the pastor's concerns over her daughter's showbiz lifestyle and desire for the singer to become a worship leader.

Katy Perry's mother believes she could be a preacher.

The 'Teenage Dream' singer's parents Mary and Keith Hudson - who are both Christian pastors - have conflicting feelings about her pop career but her mum can see her skill her gift for entertaining a crowd being used for a spiritual purpose.

Expressing her desire to see Katy become "a Kathryn Kuhlman type of healer" - an evangelist and faith healer who began preaching aged 16 - Mary wrote in a proposal for a new book about her daughter's impact on her ministry: "I recognised the psalmist gift in her performance. Yet she sang out, 'I kissed a girl, and I liked it,' while thousands joined her. One part of my heart soared . the other part broke for the thousands of hungry souls being fed something that didn't nourish their spirit, but fed their flesh."

Oh, dear God, how can I save her from all this? The money, the fame, the network, the people surrounding her, how can I compete?

According to the New York Post newspaper, the proposal also details how Mary feels uncomfortable with her daughter's flesh flashing stage outfits, but refuses to voice her disapproval.

Recalling an incident backstage at one of the 26-year-old star's concerts, Mary wrote: "Katy stepped out from behind the changing doors in a tiny risque costume. No mother wants to see the top of her daughter's boobs . My first instinct was to order her back behind those doors and demand she put something else on . However, I had no problem letting my eyebrows say what I wouldn't allow my mouth to utter."

While Mary insists she is happy with the successes her daughter - who is married to British comic Russell Brand - has achieved, she admits she worries about "saving" her from the music industry.

She added: "Oh, dear God, how can I save her from all this? The money, the fame, the network, the people surrounding her, how can I compete?"
