Palmdale sex offender arrested on suspicion of trying to kidnap girl

PALMDALE - An 81-year-old registered sex offender was arrested today for allegedly trying to kidnap a young girl in the Littlerock district, sheriff's officials said.

The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. near Pearblossom Highway and 85th Street East, according to the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The girl was walking ahead of her parents when the suspect, identified as Keith Holmes, pulled alongside her and asked if she wanted a ride, sheriff's officials said.

Holmes allegedly continued to drive slowly alongside her when she declined. Officials said when the girl's mother spoke with the suspect and tried to find out what he wanted he sped away.

While he was stopped at a red light nearby, the girl's mother took a description of Holmes, the vehicle and his license plate number and reported the incident to authorities.

Deputies later detained Holmes during a traffic stop and the girl and her mother identified him as the suspect.

Authorities found items consistent with intent to kidnap in the vehicle and Holmes was arrested and booked for attempted kidnapping of a child under 14.

Holmes, a registered sex offender, has previously been arrested by Palmdale sheriff's station deputies and convicted of annoying or molesting a child twice since December 2009. He is on probation for those convictions.
