Jennifer Lopez predicts her next project will be "the biggest thing that I've been involved with yet."

But just how can the American Idol judge top a career filled with top-selling albums, high-energy music videos, blockbuster movies, eye-popping fashion and media mogul business moves?

On her new show, Q'Viva! The Chosen, Lopez, 41, will travel with husband Marc Anthony and tour-director-to-the-stars Jamie King to 21 countries across the Americas. They will be searching for the "world's most extraordinary talent," says Anthony, 41.

As for the show itself, it will be filmed in three languages and broadcast simultaneously on leading TV networks across the Western Hemisphere. The search for the talent begins in July.

Locals Lead to Talent

The Chosen, from Idol creator Simon Fuller, isn't holding auditions. Instead, Lopez, Anthony and King are "literally being guided by the [local] people," Anthony says, "leaving no stone unturned."

The trio will head to "places people wouldn't normally look, where all of this rich talent lives and wouldn't normally be discovered," says Lopez. These include clubs, bars, dance studios, underground dance halls and festivals in villages, towns and cities.

"This is less about competition and more about finding great talent, cultivating that talent, putting it on stage and giving it to the rest of the world," King says.

Embracing Heritage

For Lopez, it's also about embracing her Latin heritage. "With this show we hope for the first time to unite all of the Latin cultures and make something that makes everybody proud," she says. "This is like me being able to really, really go, 'I am Latina, and this is who we are! Isn't it fabulous? Isn't it amazing? Doesn't it bring tears to your eyes and make you want to dance and smile and jump and stay up all night?' "

The artists discovered by Lopez, Anthony and King during their trip ? as well as the ones selected from videos uploaded to YouTube and Facebook ? will travel to Hollywood, where they'll be mentored by the stars to create "the ultimate live show."

"It really is a show for the 21st century. It's unprecedented in that it's global and it's local," Lopez says. "We're going to do our best make the most amazing show that the world has ever seen."

Pippa 'Her Royal Hotness' Middleton heats up French Open

Pippa Middleton turned heads as she watched Sweden's Robin Soderling playing France's Gilles Simon during the French Open.

Set, match, game.

England's favorite little sister is expanding her reign as "Her Royal Hotness" - a nickname given her by her legions of adoring fans - beyond Great Britain and into the City of Lights.

Pippa Middleton, donning her trademark oversized Gucci sunglasses, sat courtside at the French Open Monday, drawing attention away from the six-hour tennis match in play before her.

The younger Middleton turned heads in her low-cut black top and ruffled skirt as she enjoyed the tennis match between defending champion Rafael Nadal and Ivan Ljubicic in Paris alongside a female pal and two guy friends.

Pippa has been fascinating fans worldwide since she upstaged big sister Kate in a form-fitting Sarah Burton bridesmaid dress at the Royal Wedding last month.

Middleton's influence has also already impacted multiple different industries - her fit figure reportedly sparked increased demands for both butt enhancement surgeries and tanning lotions, and the Modalu bag she carried after the wedding was renamed "The Pippa" in her honor.

But the glowing Middleton's trek to Paris wasn't merely a publicity stunt.

The 27-year-old party planner is a tennis fan, and is even believed to be a member of the exclusive Queen's Club, the venue for one of Wimbledon's annual warm-up events.

And it seems like tennis love runs in the family. Older sister Kate is rumored to be presenting the prizes at Wimbledown this summer.

Amitai Etzioni: The Limits of Autonomy

The best advice I ever received from a psychoanalyst concerned the son of a friend of mine, let's call him Joe. Joe kind of adopted me, and often came over seeking advice. The young man was unrealistically optimistic. If his boss complimented him on some job he carried out, Joe was sure he soon would receive a promotion. When none of was forthcoming, far from being crushed, Joe would spin a new tale: he expected to be soon moved to a choice location. And when this move did not materialize, Joe assumed it was just being delayed.

The same with dating: a smile was interpreted as a sure sign of deep interest, a long deep look -- a potential keeper. And there always was another tomorrow. Joe was never down -- except when I tried to call his attention to his poor reality testing. The therapist warned me not to take away Joe's defenses -- before I provided him with some other foundations on which to base his self esteem. Sadly, I never found a way to help him find more realistic sources of contentment. Accordingly, I just listened sympathetically but tried not to reinforce his illusions.

I was reminded of this episode when I read in the New Yorker about a delusional woman named Linda, who believed that she was fighting off government spies and that God would provide whatever she needed. When she was hospitalized, she refused to accept that she was mentally ill. Therapists, the New Yorker reports, tend to see in such refusals -- exhibited by about half of mental patients -- a sign of illness and insist that patients accept their conditions as a first step toward a cure. Such acceptance is also needed to encourage the patients to take their medication. However, for Linda -- and many others, it seems -- this meant great humiliation. In her case, she would have to give up on the heroic role she had spun for herself and accept that she was, in her words, "crazy" -- that is, give up on the narrative that kept her going before any new ones were formed. She left the hospital, moved into an abandoned house, lived on apples she collected at night, and eventually died from malnutrition.

The New Yorker -- writing about her and many other such patients -- implies that this is the life she wanted. It was her choice; to keep her hospitalized against her will, and make her recognize her illness, would have violated her autonomy. Many other physicians and therapists and even medical ethicists would agree. They tend to see the will of the patient as free will, which should take precedent over all other considerations unless the person poses even merely potential albeit plausible threats to others or to herself. (The fact that Linda might harm herself was not clearly evident while she was released.) Thus, it seems a considerable number of therapists hold that one should not make or even unduly pressure mentally ill patients who refuse to take their medication, even if once they are on the meds they realize their benefits. The medical community wonders which is their "true" self, the medicated or the un-medicated one, and whose preferences to follow?

As I see it, mental patients are like children who are not fully competent to make decisions. Adults, who are charged with their care, owe it to the community -- and above all to the children -- to second-guess and amend their decisions, if need be by use of force. As a parent I did not let my two-year-old run into the street out of respect for his free will, nor drive when he was sixteen and high -- even when I had to wrestle away the car keys. True, as children grow older, the range of decisions they can make on their own ought to be increased -- as and if their capacity grows. But even for, say, a seventeen-year-old, I would veto his decision to invest his savings say in a hedge fund not to mention pork bellies.

The same goes for mental patients. True, they vary in their capacities, which hopefully can be made to grow, which in turn will require allowing them to make more decisions on their own and learn from their failures. However, at the end of the day, they should be medicated and, if need be, held if there are reasons to believe that may harm themselves or others. Protecting life takes precedent over respecting a will that is not free, but distorted by mental and often genetic, chemical or other malfunctions.

Interest Rates: Bank Of Canada Closely Watched For Announcement

(CBC) -- Eight times a year, the attention of Canada's financial world collectively turns to the governor of the Bank of Canada. On those select days -- always a Tuesday -- the central bank boss issues a short statement in the morning that attracts an extraordinary amount of scrutiny from a gaggle of analysts and bankers.

Why all the attention? It's because these statements are all about interest rates. This is where bankers, business people, homeowners and debtors all find out if the cost of money is going up or down -- now and in the near future.

Raising and lowering interest rates is the Bank of Canada's primary tool to either jump-start the economy or try to cool it down. This is when Canadians find out if the interest rates on their variable mortgages or lines of credit are changing.

These days, the talk is all about the cost of money going up. The Bank of Canada's current overnight lending rate -- the benchmark that everyone watches -- is at just one per cent, even after three small increases of a quarter of a percentage point each in 2010.

That's still very low by historical standards -- a deliberate policy decision by the central bank to encourage borrowing and re-inflate the economy after the bruising recession that began in late 2008.

With the economy now growing again and unemployment gradually falling, the Bank of Canada is now weighing a tricky decision -- when and how quickly to resume rate hikes.

Too soon and too fast and it runs the risk of snuffing out the nascent recovery. But wait too long or hike too slowly and the steady supply of still-cheap money runs the risk of overheating the economy -- a reality that typically manifests itself through unacceptably high inflation.

That's the delicate balancing act Mark Carney faces. And he has no shortage of critics -- professional and amateur -- with their own thoughts on the matter.
Why raise rates?

The main argument in favour of immediate and steady rate increases is that inflation is already above the central bank's stated comfort range of one to three per cent annually (3.3 per cent as of April). That thinking was behind the recent "raise rates now" recommendation of the C.D. Howe Institute's Monetary Policy Council.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development notes that, at one per cent, Canada's key lending rate is still "highly stimulative." The OECD said the Bank of Canada should soon resume raising interest rates "at a moderate pace."

But the consensus among central bank watchers is that Carney won't be in any rush to raise. This crowd cites a number of factors:

* Economic growth (which was running at an annual pace of 3.9 per cent in the first quarter) is expected to soften in the next few months, largely because of supply chain disruptions to Canada's auto sector caused by the Japanese earthquake disaster.

* Canadian households remain highly indebted (the average family debt-to-income ratio has hit a record 150 per cent, the Vanier Institute of the Family reported earlier this year). Those debts are already causing many to cut back on their spending, with consumer spending flat or even negative earlier this year. Dramatically higher interest rates would weaken the ability of many families to cope.

* The Canadian dollar -- already well above parity with its U.S. counterpart -- is hurting the competitiveness of Canadian exporters. Increases in the key interest rate in Canada, in the absence of similar increases south of the border, would drive the loonie even higher.

* Stimulus spending by the federal government largely wound up a couple of months ago and the drive by all governments (federal and provincial) to cut back on spending in the future to eventually balance their books will be a drag on growth.

* The global economic picture is gloomier than it was a few months ago as the sovereign debt crisis sweeping through parts of Europe (notably Greece) keeps rearing its head. Growth in China is also moderating and, in the U.S., high unemployment levels and a persistently weak housing market are expected to continue to keep consumers cautious.

* While it's true that total CPI inflation in Canada is running at a hot 3.3 per cent, the core rate of inflation, which excludes such volatile items like energy and fresh fruit and vegetables, is just 1.6 per cent -- not a level that the Bank of Canada needs to immediately worry about.

Faced with all the economic push-and-pull, analysts were almost unanimous in their views that the central bank's key rate wouldn't move on May 31. That was quite a change from just a few months ago, when many analysts were calling for a May hike. But that was then. While a few analysts are now calling for a July rate hike, most say that Mark Carney will likely hold off on making any hike until the fall.

"Recent communications from Bank of Canada officials suggest that they are not in a rush to raise interest rates in light of their growing concerns about developments such as the high Canadian dollar and the uncertain global economic climate," reads a recent briefing note from TD Economics.

The watchwords for the Bank of Canada -- at least for the medium term -- seem to be for a gradual phase-out of its low interest rate policy.

Look for an overnight lending rate of perhaps 1.75 per cent by the end of the year and a more "normal" overnight rate of three per cent by mid-2012, the markets are saying now.

But that will depend on how the governments, consumers and economies of the world behave in the months to come.

Nation pays tribute on Memorial Day marked by parades, flyovers, flags

CANOGA PARK PARADE

AMERICA REMEMBERS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans from the nation's capital to Alaska marked Memorial Day with parades, somber reflection and even a climbing expedition in a holiday infused with fresh meaning by the approaching 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The National Memorial Day Parade in Washington honored veterans and America's war dead but also featured special tributes to Sept. 11 first responders, victims and their families. Also fresh in the minds of parade participants and watchers was the killing less than a month ago of Osama bin Laden, who masterminded the attacks.

Elsewhere, military jets thundered through the sky above New York after a wreath-laying ceremony aboard an aircraft carrier that's been turned into a museum, while hundreds of volunteers put small flags on the 25,000 graves at a sprawling military cemetery near Las Vegas. U.S. troops fighting in Afghanistan also took time out to remember fallen comrades.

Along the parade route in Washington, children sat on parents' shoulders and throngs cheered the passing high school marching bands and floats of war veterans. Special guests included Medal of Honor recipients, astronaut and Korean War veteran Buzz Aldrin and actor Gary Sinise, a veterans advocate who played Lt. Dan in the Oscar-winning film "Forrest Gump."

Hamilton Peterson, who lost his father and stepmother when the hijacked United Airlines 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa., said the looming anniversary of the

terror attacks should serve as a reminder to Americans to be vigilant.

"Obviously, bin Laden's death is a highlight of the 10th anniversary. However, we recognize that future attacks are imminent and that, absent using 9/11 as a model for how to respond, all Americans need to get involved. It can't just be the military," said Peterson, 51.

Sgt. James Patrick McMichael of the Arlington County, Va., sheriff's office was among the first responders to the Pentagon and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder about two years later. He said that even though the anniversary was dredging up painful memories, it's still critical that the public never lose memory of the attacks - especially to make sure they don't happen again.

A commercial jet crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, killing 184 people at the sprawling Defense Department headquarters.

"Reliving the event is not something that I look forward to, but I don't think it should be something that's not brought up to the public," said McMichael, who attended the parade in Washington. "I don't think people should forget about what occurred."

The parade featured a Shanksville fire engine and a red, white and blue float bearing the images of the victims on miniature twin towers.

Seventeen-year-old spectator Zach Garrett recalled watching coverage of the attacks as a third-grader.

"Watching it on the TV, it was disturbing at that age," said the Alpharetta, Ga., resident who was visiting Washington with his family. "And here, 10 years later, this big parade - everybody's participating and everybody's on the sidelines cheering everybody on. There's a lot of patriotism here."

President Barack Obama participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington.

"Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we cannot ever fully repay," Obama said in a speech. "But we can honor their sacrifice, and we must."

In New York, Lynn Berat dressed her young daughters in matching red, white and blue sundresses for a the ceremony at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on the west side of Manhattan.

"I think it's important that they understand the spirit of Memorial Day instead of just barbecuing," she said.

Five Army Rangers stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state climbed Mount McKinley in Alaska, reaching the summit Friday night in honor of 11 Rangers from their regiment who have died in the line of duty. They planted a flag at the summit bearing the names of the fallen.

At the cemetery near Las Vegas, 87-year-old World War II veteran Bernard Miller was among hundreds who placed the small flags on graves.

"A lot of my friends are buried here," Miller said afterward, standing in a bright red jacket and cap with insignia marking his Marine service. "They've done their job. I could be there with them, but the good Lord doesn't want me right now."

U.S. troops fighting in Afghanistan paused for Memorial Day services, with some praying and holding flag-raising ceremonies to recognize the more than 1,400 who have been killed in combat there since the war began a decade ago.

Obama plans to draw down U.S. troops in Afghanistan beginning in July, while NATO has committed to handing over control of security in the country to Afghans by 2014. For now, though, the war continues.

"We reflect on those who have gone before us. We reflect on their service and their sacrifice on behalf of our great nation," said Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Craparotta, who commands a Marine division in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province. "We should also remember those serving today who embody that same commitment of service and sacrifice."

Which Kardashian Will Survive the Apocalypse?

We heart the Kardashian clan just as much as some of you love to hate them! But instead of gushing about the goofy and often-glamorous gals, we decided to quiz them on each other: high school yearbook style.

We recently caught up with Kris, Khlo and Kourtney here at E! Headquarters and had them vote which sis is smartest and sexiest and what not.

First up, we wanted to know, post-nuclear war, which Kardash would the cockroaches still be keeping up with?

RELATED: Will Kim's wedding be bigger than Kate Middleton's?

The family votes: Khlo. Duh!

But in case you haven't seen any of her on numerous reality shows ('cause if you did that claim is hardly debatable), Khlo is the toughest due to her off-the-charts street-smarts and other brain powers.

We still say she's a force to be reckoned with who would kick the crap out of anybody in her way.

"I'm not like a he-man!" Khlo defended herself. "I'm just the strongest...I'm incredibly street smart and savvy and like I have common sense and I can navigate everything."

According to the strongest K., her common sense extends to men, whipping up "a good dinner," and just, ya know, "everything!"

Khlo may have the most street-smarts, but when we pressed her on who's the smartest of the three (after originally claiming that title for herself too), both she and Kris agree that Kourt is the smartest Kardashian overall.

Khlo spilled, "Kourtney's incredibly book smart and just business oriented."

To which Kourt replied: "Yes. Thank you."

And as for the hottest Kardashian? We're sure we don't even need to ask, do we?

Kim, with a unanimous vote.

Touchdown! Tony Romo Marries Candice Crawford

It was fourth and goal, and Tony Romo scored.

The NFL star tied the knot with Candice Crawford Saturday evening at the historic Arlington Hall at Lee Park, a lushly landscaped 9-acre spread in the heart of Dallas, according to People.

Among those looking on were the bride's older brother, Chace Crawford, and a host of Dallas Cowboys, including team owner Jerry Jones and his family.

MORE: Jessica Simpson and footballer beau engaged

"I'm very excited," Chace told E! News in February about his sister's upcoming nuptials. "I'm very happy that she's happy."

Romo popped the question Dec. 16, his bride-to-be's 24th birthday, after about a year and a half of dating. Crawford, who was named Miss Missouri in 2008 and was a top-10 finisher for Miss USA, was a sports reporter for KDAF-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth at the time.

And there were no mutterings from the locker room peanut gallery this time around!

Romo, who, depending on how the NFL lockout goes, may have time for a long honeymoon, previously romanced Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson before settling down.

When David Letterman asked in March 2010 if she and Romo still got along, Simpson replied, "He's going to be one of my friends for life, sure."

Just not a friend she has to make a stop at Crate & Barrel for.

David Beckham -- 'Speeding Really Bad' Before Crash

David Beckham was driving like a MANIAC before swerving into another lane at a dangerously high speed ... and rear-ending a stalled vehicle earlier this month -- this according to multiple 911 calls.

0527_David_Beckham_Audio_911_EX2

One caller -- who claims she was driving behind David for several miles-- reported that David was "driving recklessly" and "speeding really bad" before slamming into the stalled car on May 6.

Another caller claims David was "definitely speeding" -- pulling in and out of the carpool lane ... "breaking a couple traffic laws."

As we previously reported, Beckham rear-ended another car with his Black Escalade ... on one of the busiest highways in L.A. -- and the other driver had to be taken to the hospital.

Beckham -- whose son Brooklyn was in the car with him at the time -- has not been arrested or cited.

A spokesman for Beckham tells us, "As unfortunate as accidents are, David was not cited by the police at the scene for any violations."

T.J. Brady: Home From War, But Still Under Fire

This Memorial Day, elected officials will be delivering speeches that sing the praises of our military service-members at countless hometown events as we remember our fallen heroes from current and past wars. I highly encourage everyone reading this to attend such an event. But no matter where you find yourself today, I ask that you remember not only those who gave their lives in service to this nation, but also those who now face the prospect of becoming casualties of the Washington budget wars -- military veterans.

During the April budget impasse that nearly resulted in a government shutdown, House Republicans fired a warning shot at veterans by passing H.R. 1, which sought to end the Housing and Urban Development Agency's Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program (HUD-VASH). In the past three years, the HUD-VASH program has helped nearly 30,000 veterans by providing housing vouchers and assistance to help them get back on their feet. Thankfully, H.R. 1 was defeated in the Senate, but the battle isn't over.

The so-called deficit hawks are back on the warpath. House Speaker Boehner is now calling for trillions of dollars in cuts from the federal budget, as opposed to the one-hundred billion in cuts Republicans fought for in April. Not only that, but the current Republican budget blueprint, the "Ryan Plan," sets the 2012 Veterans Affairs budget at $128 billion, down $4.2 billion from the department's proposed budget. With our military currently fighting three wars which are creating more wounded veterans every day, the Ryan budget is a slap in the face to anyone who has ever served in uniform.

It wasn't always this way. Support for veterans used to be a non-partisan no-brainer. It was understood that when men and women put on a uniform and take up arms to defend this country, the country makes a sacred promise to them that they will not be left behind and will not be forgotten. Service-members lay their lives on the line because of that promise, knowing that the man or woman next to them in combat will "never leave them behind." If we break this promise, we weaken the institutions that are tasked to protect us. How can we expect high-caliber individuals to continue enlisting in our armed forces when our government shows such a callous disregard for those who have served? The quality of our recruits will decline, and the quality of our military will suffer as a result.

With all of that said, I do agree with Speaker Boehner that our country cannot continue to increase our budget deficit and pass on the debt burden to future generations. This is irresponsible and will threaten the quality of life we who are fortunate to enjoy as American citizens. But we should not balance our checkbook at the expense of the values that define what it means to be American in the first place.

Those concerned about the budget deficit have several other courses of action they can pursue that do not put our veterans at risk: First, they could start promoting energy security and freedom from our dependence on foreign oil. If we can stop being dragged into costly wars, the cost of which make the Veterans Assistance budget look like pocket change, then spending will go down and revenue will go up due to the millions of jobs we could create right here in America.

Secondly, they could take the long-view on the issue of Veterans Assistance -- national programs like Housing First show that addressing homelessness early is far more cost-effective than paying for the medical bills and law enforcement costs associated with long-term, chronic homelessness in our cities.

Finally, we can ask our citizens, specifically the richest among us, to pay slightly higher taxes. We all need to do more than wave the flag on Memorial Day. If our citizens and our elected leaders truly believe that this country and the ideals it embodies are worth dying for, then we ought to have the integrity to stand up and say that those ideals are worth paying for, as well.

PIC: Justin Bieber's Hebrew 'Jesus' tattoo

Justin Bieber's tattoo - 'Jesus' written in Hebrew - was uncovered in Hawaii earlier this week.

Flynet/Splash

Justin Bieber's tattoo - 'Jesus' written in Hebrew - was uncovered in Hawaii earlier this week.

Despite some unfortunate incidents with the paparazzi, it seems Justin Bieber may have left Israel last month with a little inspiration.

The 17-year-old is now sporting a Hebrew tattoo on the left side of his rib cage, underneath his arm.

Bieber's ink, which consists of several Hebrew letters, was revealed during his Hawaiian vacation earlier this week, where he was photographed shirtless on the beach.

According to reports, the English translation of the tattoo is "Jesus" ? hardly a surprise given Bieber's devout Christian background.

"Christianity was based off of Jesus being a Jew," he told The Guardian last year. "I respect it."

It's not known where or when the teen sensation had the tattoo done, but he also has a small bird inked onto his lower left torso, as was revealed last year.

Rihanna Wants Chris Brown Back And Has Secretly Seen Him Twice

Is Rihanna a sucker for love? A close source has revealed to a UK tabloid, that the singer wants Chris Brown back and has been secretly meeting up with him at a mutual friends house. Being that Rihanna?s fans are not having it, she is having a hard time doing this in the public. She is still in love with Chris but doesn?t want to put her career in jeopardy. The public discovered Rihanna and Chris Brown had recently followed one another on twitter and in February therestrainingorder Rihanna had put on Chris was lifted in time for the grammy awards. I say if these two are in love and want to be together so be it. Isn?t this amazing how this is still a hot topic?

?Ri-Ri?s always loved Chris ? that never changed,? reveals a source. ?They?ve texted and Skyped each other a lot recently and met up at a mutual friend?s house in Los Angeles after the restraining order expired.?

?Ri-Ri wants to be with Chris but is worried about her career and fans,? says our insider.

?She?s trying to find a way to take him back publicly without letting down her supporters, her management and her friends or setting a bad example.

?Chris has said he?ll be as patient as she needs him to be but after being slammed on Twitter for just following him, she?s begun to worry that they may never get to be together in public.?

DVD Extra: Steve McQueen revs up 'Le Mans'

By Steve Jones, USA TODAY

In the 1960s and 1970s, cool was defined by two words ?Steve McQueen.

  • Steve McQueen raced competively to support himself in the 1950s before his acting career took off.

    Warner Home Video

Steve McQueen raced competively to support himself in the 1950s before his acting career took off.

Warner Home Video

Steve McQueen raced competively to support himself in the 1950s before his acting career took off.

He was always the handsome outsider whose quiet confidence, intrepid attitude and contempt for authority gave him a magnetism few stars could match.

McQueen also had a penchant for satisfying fans' need for speed. Whether it was in Bullitt's often imitated, but never duplicated chase scene through San Francisco streets in a Ford Mustang GT, or The Great Escape's harrowing motorcycle flight from a P.O.W. camp on a Triumph TR6 Trophy with German soldiers in pursuit, he literally revved up the action. And though the studios forced him to give way to stuntmen for the most dangerous maneuvers, McQueen spent plenty of time in the driver's seat.

The same is true in Le Mans (1971, Paramount, G, $20; Blu-ray, $25), which has been digitally restored and is being released on Blu-ray for the first time in celebration of its 40th anniversary. The cult classic depicts France's annual 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world's oldest and most famous endurance auto race. McQueen plays a man oblivious to the inherent danger, and addicted to the rush that it gives.

"What's so important about driving faster than anyone else?" McQueen's Michael Delaney is asked by the widow (Elga Andersen) of a driver who crashed and died in the race a year earlier.

"A lot of people go through life doing things badly," responds Delaney, who was badly hurt in the same accident. "Racing is important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting."

Waiting, it seems, was not in the actor's makeup. McQueen, who died of cancer at age 50 in 1980, spent much of his life racing motorcycles and automobiles. While taking acting lessons in the early 1950s, he supported himself by winning motorcycle competitions. In 1970, he finished second in Florida's Grand Prix-style 12 Hours at Sebring (won by Mario Andretti) with professional driver teammate Peter Revson in a Porsche 908 Spyder that would be used as a camera car during the filming of Le Mans. At Sebring, McQueen ? who had broken his foot in six places in a motorbike crash two weeks earlier ? drove wearing a cast.

It's no idle boast, then, when the film's trailer (a bonus feature with the new release) proclaims: "Le Mans. The men. The machines. The motion picture. Steve McQueen stars in it. No one else could." Also included is the mini-feature Filming at Speed: The Making of the Movie Le Mans, hosted by the star's son, Chad McQueen (he too is an actor and auto racer, and as a child was on the set). Le Mans was made on the heels of his father's 1968 blockbuster Bullitt, and he said it was Steve's goal to make "the ultimate motor racing movie."

The filmmakers, including director Lee H. Katzin, went to great lengths to get everything right, bringing 20 camera crews to film the 1969 race just to learn how to shoot it the following year when they were making the movie. The first half-hour of the film (which has sparse plot and dialogue in general) doesn't have a scripted word. Instead, it lets you drink in the sights and sounds surrounding the 8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe, around which cars hit speeds in excess of 230 mph in the grueling endurance race. The camera takes you into the bustle of pit row, where fans, drivers, mechanics and journalists jostle each other, and to the tent communities of racing enthusiasts along the countryside route. What story there is centers on the fierce rivalry between the Porsche and Ferrari race teams.

There are no CGI tricks at work here, but you can almost feel the ground vibrations and the whip of the wind as the Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512s fly by, swapping paint and navigating hairpin turns. The adrenaline rush is so palpable, the imagination seems to supply the only missing elements ? the smells of sweat, burnt rubber and exhaust fumes. You may even catch yourself tamping the brakes as the gap between that guardrail or those tail lights up ahead rapidly closes.
