Parents, teachers, students protest possible budget cuts, layoffs at Sherman Oaks school

SHERMAN OAKS - About 200 parents, teachers and students concerned about possible budget cuts and teacher layoffs protested today at Millikan Middle School in Sherman Oaks, but classes were not disrupted, according to the school district.

The group began gathering at the campus in the 5000 block of Sunnyslope Avenue around 5 a.m., said Monica Carazo of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

When the bell rang for classes to begin at 8 a.m., the students and teachers went to class, but some parents continued to protest, Carazo said.

Actor Luke Perry was among the protesters.

Eighteen teachers at the school have been notified that they may lose their jobs because of cuts in the LAUSD budget, Carazo said.
