Vestaments worn by Pope John Paul II to be displayed at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels this weekend

Vestments worn by Pope John Paul II during Masses he celebrated at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Dodger Stadium during his 1987 visit to the city will be displayed at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels this weekend, coinciding with his beatification in Rome.

The display will remain at the cathedral through the end of May, and include a kneeler used by the pope, his white "zucchetto" head covering and other items, according to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Photos from his visit will also be on display.

Diocese spokesman Tod Tamberg said that since John Paul II is being beatified, the items he used are now considered "holy relics."

"Some of the items, like the vestments and mitre he wore at the Coliseum Mass are being displayed publicly for the first time in nearly 25 years," Tamberg said.

Ceremonies will be held in Rome this weekend to mark John Paul II's beatification, which is a preliminary step toward sainthood. After being beatified, he will be referred to as Blessed Pope John Paul II.

Becoming a saint requires two confirmed miracles. Beatification means that one miracle has been confirmed.

"Blessed John Paul's gift was to make the Christian ideal seem new again," Los Angeles Archbishop Jose H. Gomez said. "He lived the Gospel with a passion and intelligence that was compelling and attractive. He inspired many to want to follow him, to share the joy of his friendship with Jesus Christ, to

dedicate themselves to what he called the `high standard of ordinary Christian living."'

Gomez will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving for the Beatification of Blessed Pope John Paul II at 8 a.m. Sunday at the cathedral, 555 W. Temple St.
