Mel Gibson posed for a mug shot at an El Segundo, Calif. police station Wednesday night.LOS ANGELES - Mel Gibson chose a mug shot over the red carpet.
The star of Jodie Foster's latest flick "The Beaver" skipped the film's Texas premiere and instead walked into an El Segundo, Calif. police station shortly before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday for formal booking on a misdemeanor battery charge.
The 55-year-old actor was arrested, photographed, fingerprinted and released.
"He was cooperative. Everything went smoothly," Lt. Raymond Garcia of the El Segundo Police Department told the Daily News.
It was last Friday that Gibson accepted a no-jail plea bargain to end the criminal probe into claims he assaulted his ex-lover Oksana Grigorieva during a heated argument at his Malibu home last year.
He pleaded no contest and received three years probation, a year of mandatory counseling and 16 hours of community service.
"He's entering this plea because it's in the best interest of his children," his lawyer Blair Berk said.

Foster, meanwhile, praised the actor at last night's premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin.
"People will see the movie, and they'll see what an incredibly deep and committed performance he gives, and hopefully they'll have some insight into who Mel is as a human being," she told People.com.
The flick stars Gibson as a clinically depressed man who dons a beaver hand puppet to claw his way back from the brink.
